The coastal belt of Gujarat is a highly dynamic area. This dynamism is reflected in the extents of developmental activities, which are currently taking place along this coastal belt like: Special Economic Zones, development of Ports, setting up of Salt and Cement industries, Oil and Natural gas exploration etc. This is in addition to increase in anthropogenic pressure, owing to the growing population along the coast. Marine fisheries activity is very well
established and coastal aquaculture has shown immense potential for further development in the State. Creating basic information of coastal areas using latest technologies like Remote sensing and
GIS, is envisaged for better management and planning of coastal environment and their resources for safe, secure, prosperous and sustainable coastal zone areas. This would facilitate further development of coastal dependent communities and users. Geo-informatics has apparent potential for contributing significantly to coastal management in a number of ways. The use of geo-informatics is an important tool in management and regulation of coastal areas as with this technology, changes over a period of time can be tracked and future changes can be projected.
To provide a scientific base and data for supporting the process of Integrated Coastal Zone Planning and Management at various levels.
To prepare large scale accurate geo database and maps on 1:8,000 scale showing HTL (High Tide Line) and LTL (Low Tide Line) using CARTOSAT / IRS P6- LISS IV data.
Depict wetland categories between HTL and LTL and land use above HTL.
Development of database for coastal infrastructure (e.g. Ports, Jetties, Coastal Highways, Break-water structures etc.) by linking of land and coastal areas.
To prepare DTM (Digital Terrain Model) and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) for the coastal areas of Gujarat.
To design, create and organize the digital database in GIS environment comprising information generated as a part of (1) to (3)
To conceptualize, design and develop a geo-spatial based software for retrieving.
Coastal Area Information at Village level.
